Random Team Maker — Split Players into Fair Teams Instantly
Randomly divide any group into balanced teams with a spinning wheel. Free, instant, no signup — perfect for sports, classrooms and party games.
Whether you're organizing a pickup soccer match, splitting a classroom into project groups, or breaking up the family for a backyard tournament, picking teams by hand is slow and never feels totally fair. Random Team Maker takes the awkwardness out of it: type in everyone's name, choose how many teams you need, and let the wheel hand out players one spin at a time. The balanced mode rotates assignments so each team ends up with the same headcount (give or take one), which is exactly what you want for competitive play.
Everything happens in your browser. Names never leave your device, there are no accounts to create, and there's no upload step — the wheel runs locally with a clean, animated draw. Need a different split? Hit Shuffle Again and the tool re-randomizes instantly without resetting your players or team names. When you're done, one click copies a tidy plain-text roster to your clipboard so you can paste it into a group chat, a whiteboard, or your tournament bracket.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does balanced team distribution work?
When 'Balanced teams' is on, players are shuffled and then dealt out round-robin — first player to Team 1, second to Team 2, and so on. That guarantees each team has the same number of players, plus or minus one when the total doesn't divide evenly. Turn it off if you'd rather every player be assigned to a completely random team, even if that means uneven sizes.
Can I rename the teams?
Yes. Each team name is editable on the setup screen — just click the pencil icon, type a custom name like 'Reds', 'Project Alpha' or 'Cabin 4', and press Enter. Custom names carry through to the results screen and the copied roster.
What's the minimum number of players?
You need at least two players, and the player count must be greater than or equal to the number of teams. There's no hard upper limit — the wheel handles dozens of names without slowing down, though very large lists are easier to read after using the Skip Animation button.
What is Random Team Maker good for?
Anything that needs fair, fast group splits: pickup sports, classroom group projects, summer-camp activities, trivia nights, escape-room teams, work icebreakers, board-game alliances, dodgeball, and family games. Because everything runs locally, it works just as well offline once the page has loaded.
