Free Chess Game Online — Play Chess Against AI in Your Browser
Play chess against a smart AI opponent in your browser. Choose to play as White or Black. Full rules, legal move highlights, and pawn promotion. Free, no signup.
Skycally's Chess lets you play a full game of chess against a built-in AI opponent, directly in your browser with no download or account required. Choose whether to play as White or Black before starting, then click any of your pieces to see every legal move highlighted — click a destination square to play. The AI responds automatically using a minimax engine with alpha-beta pruning and positional evaluation.
The game enforces all standard chess rules: castling (kingside and queenside), en passant captures, pawn promotion with a choice of queen, rook, bishop, or knight, and check and checkmate detection. Illegal moves are automatically prevented, so you can focus on strategy rather than rules. A check warning highlights when your king is under attack.
Choose your side at the start: White goes first by convention, while Black plays a reactive game responding to the AI's opening. When playing as Black, the board flips automatically so your pieces are always at the bottom — a standard orientation used in competitive chess. You can start a new game at any time using the New Game button.
Chess is one of the oldest and most played strategy games in the world, with a history spanning over 1,500 years. It develops critical thinking, pattern recognition, planning ahead, and tactical awareness. Whether you're a beginner learning the basics or an intermediate player looking for practice, this browser-based opponent provides a consistent, available challenge at any time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose to play as White or Black?
Yes. Before starting, select White or Black using the color picker on the setup screen. When playing as Black, the board automatically flips so your pieces are at the bottom.
How strong is the AI?
The AI uses a minimax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning and positional evaluation — a solid intermediate-level opponent that plays legal, strategic moves. It's challenging for beginners and recreational for intermediate players.
Are all chess rules supported?
Yes. Castling (both kingside and queenside), en passant captures, pawn promotion, check detection, checkmate, and stalemate are all fully implemented.
How do I castle?
Click the king and then click the rook's destination square (two squares toward the rook). Castling is only available if neither the king nor rook has moved and the squares between them are empty and not under attack.
How does pawn promotion work?
When your pawn reaches the last rank, a promotion dialog appears. Select queen, rook, bishop, or knight. The queen is the strongest choice in almost all situations.
How do I start a new game?
Click the New Game button below the board at any time. This also lets you switch sides between games.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. The board is touch-friendly and scales to fit any screen size. Tap a piece to select it and tap the destination square to move.
Can I undo a move?
Currently there is no undo feature — each move is final. Start a new game if you want to try a different approach.
