Free Breakout Game Online — Classic Brick Breaking Arcade Game
Play the classic Breakout arcade game free in your browser. Break all bricks with a bouncing ball and paddle. Multiple levels, increasing speed. No signup.
Skycally's Breakout recreates the iconic 1976 Atari arcade classic directly in your browser. Move the paddle left and right to keep the ball in play. The ball bounces off the paddle, walls, and ceiling — when it hits a brick, the brick is destroyed and the ball bounces back. Clear all bricks to advance to the next level.
Breakout was designed by Steve Wozniak (with help from Steve Jobs) for Atari in 1976, and its elegant physics loop — one ball, one paddle, one objective — has made it one of the most enduring and cloned game concepts in history. Its descendant Arkanoid (1986) added power-ups and cemented the 'brick breaker' genre.
The game gets progressively harder: each level has more bricks and the ball moves faster. Bricks in different rows score different points — colored bricks near the top are worth more. When the ball breaks through to the top rows, it moves extremely fast and can clear many bricks in rapid succession — a high-scoring moment that skilled players aim for.
Keeping the ball in play is the core skill. As speed increases, anticipate where the ball will go several bounces ahead. Position the paddle under the predicted landing spot rather than chasing the ball reactively. Hitting the ball with the edge of the paddle angles it sharply, giving you more control over direction.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I control the paddle?
Move the mouse or touch to move the paddle. On desktop, arrow keys or A/D keys also control the paddle. Keep the ball in play by hitting it with the paddle.
What happens if the ball falls below the paddle?
You lose a life. After all lives are lost, the game ends.
How many lives do I have?
Typically 3 lives. The life count is shown in the game interface.
Do different colored bricks score differently?
Yes. Bricks closer to the top of the screen are usually worth more points, reflecting the original Breakout scoring system.
What happens when I clear all bricks?
The level is complete and you advance to the next level with a fresh brick layout and increased ball speed.
Does the ball get faster?
Yes. Ball speed increases with each level and sometimes when it hits certain rows of bricks — making advanced stages progressively more challenging.
Is my high score saved?
Yes. Your best score is saved in your browser's localStorage.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. Touch or swipe to move the paddle. The game scales to fit mobile screen sizes.
